The Greece Girls Soccer League (GGSL) was established to provide girls in the Town of Greece, NY with opportunities to do the following:
- Have fun
- Learn the skills necessary to play good soccer
- Develop physically and socially
- Learn to work as a member of a team toward a common goal
Previous knowledge of soccer is not necessary.
GGSL is a recreational house league, which means that we only play teams within our own organization, and we do not travel to play teams in other organizations. There are seven age groups: U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U19.
There are no try-outs for GGSL, and any girl who lives in the Town of Greece, New York, may join by filling out a registration form and paying the registration fee (provided we have enough teams available). Historically, registration for the next season kicks off on-line in October and walk-in registration is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Registration forms are available at the registration location and through the Town of Greece Community and Senior Center, 3 Vince Tofany Blvd., Greece, New York 14612 in October.
The House Program is an outdoor recreational league that is run during the spring and summer from May - July each year. Players ages run from 5 to 19, depending on date of birth (see our Player Eligibility & Age Matrix pages for additional information). We will have teams in each of seven divisions, U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U19, based on the number of registrants.
GGSL emphasizes making soccer fun for the players. Since the girls have the most fun when they’re actually playing, GGSL requires that each girl play at least 1/2 of each game. The coaches are encouraged to even out the playing time as much as possible. In particular, no girl can play 4 quarters in a single game unless everyone on the team is playing at least 3 quarters.
Coaches
All of the coaches in GGSL are volunteers. About 1/3 of our head coaches are new every year. Many of them have been assitant coaches in the past, but a few of our volunteers have had no previous experience coaching soccer. GGSL continues to try to find effective ways to train both our new coaches and our experienced house coaches so that the girls playing in the league get the best possible soccer experience.
Board of Directors
All of the members of the Board of Directors of GGSL are also volunteers. There are no paid employees in the League. The number of people on the Board has continued to grow over the years as we have expanded the size and scope of our program. There were 18 Board of Directors positions authorized in the Greece Girls Soccer League Bylaws, September 10, 1992 edition. It has been our policy to increase the size of the Board whenever the workload of the Board members has gotten too large for them to handle comfortably, or when we needed a new function performed. We feel that the more people we can actively involve in the operation of the GGSL, the stronger the League will become.
Age Requirements
The Age Groups for the House Program are Under 6, Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, and Under 19. Please see the Age Matrix at our Player Registration Center for further clarification. Please note that these dates are strictly adhered. No exceptions will be made. A birth certificate must accompany all new players.
Fees
Registration fees are established for each program. Please see the individual season links for related costs. There will be a $30 charge imposed for all returned checks.
Refund Policy
Please be sure your child is certain he/she wants to play. There are no refunds.
Equipment
Players are provided a Uniform Kit which includes 1 jersey, shorts and socks. Uunder 6 (U6) players also receive a size 3 soccer ball and shin guards. All players must also wear shin guards and wear soccer cleats during games. A water bottle, mouth guard, and a #4 soccer ball (U8, U10, U11, U12) or a #5 soccer ball (U14, U16, & U19) are also recommended, but not required.
Team Assignments
Our volunteer Age Group Commissioners do the best job they can to place players on teams. Due to the complexity of this task, no special requests will be honored. Siblings are kept together on a team within the same age division. Please remember we can only have as many teams as we have volunteers to coach. The number of participants may be limited by the availability of coaches. Therefore, those who register on time, but were last to be received, unfortunately may not be able to participate in the season (in these cases, refunds will be made).
Tykes Program
Our TYKES program is for girls who are between 5 and 6 years of age. The program has been developed and fine tuned to give girls in this age group (with NO prior experience!) a basic understanding of soccer. The program is 10 weeks long, starting in May and ending in July. The teams meet once a week, on Wednesday evenings from ABOUT 6:00 to 8:00PM. During each of those 10 weeks, the coaches and parent helpers will teach the girls a specific skill or rule of soccer as described to them in the Coaches’ Training Guide we provide to each Coach. These lessons will be supported by small-sided (4 vs.4) scrimmages, where the girls will get a chance to try out and practice what they have learned. The weekly lesson plan and the TYKES program in general has been reviewed and approved by the New Jersey MetroStars / Red Bulls, a Major League Soccer team that has a Youth Soccer Training unit.
Games
Ten league games are planned for each session and are held on various days throughout the week and an occasional weekend game at various fields throughout the Town of Greece. Game times vary week to week on weeknights between 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM and on weekends between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Games are approximately 1 hour in length.
GGSL hosts an end of the season tournament called SoccerFest for all House teams. Click here for additional information.
Practices
There is generally one practice per week for outdoor programs, as set by the coach. There are no practices for the indoor leagues.
Parental Commitment
The Greece Girls Soccer League is a volunteer organization. Any time/talent contribution you can give is greatly appreciated. House League parents are also asked to take a turn bringing a post-game snack and drink for the outdoor leagues.
